Georges Dayez (1907-1991) studied under the sculptors Arnold and Wlérick in evening classes offered by the City of Paris, then under Lucien Simon at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1926. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1928, worked independently, and in 1942 met André Lhote, who accelerated his artistic development. From 1944 onward, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de Mai, the Salon des Indépendants, the Luxembourg Exhibition, UNESCO, etc. The Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris holds his painting "Seated Figure." In 1945, he participated in the first Salon de Mai, to whose committee he was appointed in 1950. In 1947, he traveled to Florence and Venice, from where he brought back paintings that would form the basis of his first solo exhibition, including some still lifes and compositions on the theme of masons. 1950: First tapestry, which will be followed by six others. 1951-52: Teaches at the André Lhote Academy; exhibition in Sweden. 1954: exhibition in Paris which will be regularly followed by others. 1956: Begins a series of landscapes of Normandy: Etretat, Yport, Varengeville, until 1960. His admiration for Braque is particularly noticeable in this series. From 1957, spends every winter in the Vence region. From the rocky landscapes of the South of France and gnarled olive trees, he offers a very different interpretation from his close friend Pignon, more structured, more restrained, more "classical." 1959: trip across the United States. 1960: he brings back from a trip to Greece paintings of the Acropolis and the Temple of Aegis. Long stays in Toledo, which he had already visited in 1951 and 1953. There he begins the important series devoted to this city. In 1967, he is appointed professor of the lithography workshop at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In addition to his solo exhibitions in Paris, he also exhibited in New York (1955), Milan (1966), and Madrid (1967). He participates in numerous group exhibitions, including "Ten Years of French Painting" at the Musée de Grenoble in 1956.
