Iñigo Manterola was born in Orio in 1973, into a family steeped in maritime tradition. From a very young age, he showed a keen interest in drawing and painting. At just eight years old, his teacher, after discussing it with his mother, enrolled him in extracurricular painting classes. Driven by this passion, Iñigo pursued painting studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Bilbao, where he earned a degree in painting from 1993 to 1998. After completing his studies, Iñigo participated in various workshops, most notably the MASTERY OF FIGURATION workshop with Antonio López García and Juan José Aquerreta at the Pamplona School of Architecture in 2006. He also attended the TEXTURES workshop, led by Australian artist David Kelly for the AUSTRALIS exhibition at the Kubokutxa Hall in Donostia-San Sebastián in 2010. Born into a family of sailors, Iñigo draws his inspiration from the balconies of the fishermen in the bay, the arrantzales (small fishing boats), and the bustling port. Iñigo Manterola's childhood was filled with drawing, the only way he could concentrate. At the age of nine, he painted his first oil on canvas. After high school, he studied at the Bilbao School of Fine Arts. From his childhood, the sea has been a constant presence in his work as a painter and sculptor. It's worth noting that he comes from a family of fishermen. By exploring this theme, he opens a window into his personal world.
