Jean Maxime CLAUDE
Paris 1804 - Maisonf Lafitte 1904
Seascape by Moonlight
Watercolor
Signed lower right
24 x 38 cm sheet
36 x 51 cm framed
Very good condition, the colors are very fresh. We note two small, barely visible graphite marks on each side of the sheet, likely the result of a previous framer's intervention.
Jean Maxime Claude was born in Paris and began his artistic training with Pierre Victor Galland. He exhibited for the first time at the Paris Salon in 1861 and won several medals at the Salons of 1866, 1869, and 1872. The artist's principal subjects included hunting, racing, and horsemanship, as well as landscapes and seascapes. Although he left Paris for England at an unknown date, he continued to send works for exhibition in Paris. Seven paintings by Claude were exhibited at the 1900 Universal Exhibition, following which he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour. Museums: Musée Condé, Chantilly; Musée Magnin, Dijon; Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Saint-Denis; National Museum, Stockholm; National Trust, Wimpole Hall, Cambridgeshire
