"Chanab Altar Chest, Lacquered Wood, China, 19th Century"
A very pretty box (called a Chanab) made of blackened lacquered wood, diamond-shaped and richly decorated with gold. One side features traditional scenes with figures, while the other depicts a rich, animated landscape. The entire piece rests on a richly carved, openwork gilt wooden base with lion paws at each corner. The box is in good condition in terms of decoration, but shows some wear to the lacquer and is missing a wooden piece. The base is in good condition. Length 34.5 cm, Width 13.5 cm, Height 21 cm. The chanab was placed in the center of the sam kai altar in every Chinese family in the Straits region, the most important altar in the family home. The sam kai altar was used for important ceremonies, especially weddings. When not in use, a hexagonal box of black lacquered wood was placed on top of the chanab for protection.
