"Model Of A Three-masted, Carved Wooden Sperm Whale Fishing Boat, Souvenir Globe, 19th Century"
A rare model of a three-masted sperm whale hunting vessel* in painted wood and wire, marked "Souvenir" on the stern, the ship's keel mounted on a stylized sperm whale sculpture, on a wooden base and with its globe, dating from the late 19th century. This model is in good overall condition and of remarkable quality. The fact that it is presented on a sperm whale sculpture makes it truly exceptional. Please note: some minor damage and paint loss in places, some cracks and soiling, and signs of age; please examine the photos carefully. *Sperm whale hunting is primarily for the exploitation of spermaceti, used in cosmetics, leather tanning, and as a lubricant, or, in its traditional form, the exploitation of the animal's meat and blubber. Industrial whaling began on a large scale in the 18th century, before declining towards the end of the 19th century and then experiencing a revival after the Second World War. The populations are quite heavily affected, and the International Whaling Commission proclaimed full protection for the species in 1985.
