Richly Carved Armchair, Late Régence Period
A very beautiful and elegant armchair with a cane seat and a flat, strongly shouldered back, made of molded and richly carved beechwood, decorated with asymmetrical rocaille motifs, scrolls, acanthus leaves, reticulated patterns, trefoils, water leaves, shells, lambrequins, volutes, etc., the armrests and their supports flow in a sinuous line, resting on four cabriole legs terminating in scrolls and acanthus leaves (minor damage – pitting on the rear rail of the seat rail).
Late Régence period, circa 1725/1730.
Good condition (with a worn tan leather cushion).
An armchair with the same type of trefoil motif, emphasizing the strong shoulder of the back, is now on display in the galleries of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Our armchair can be compared to the works of Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard, who became a master in Paris in 1717.
