Entirely handcrafted in gilt brass repoussé and chiseled at the end of the 19th century and set with glass cabochons imitating precious stones in ruby red, emerald green, amber yellow and crystal white tones, this rare piece of popular French religious craftsmanship is prized in sacred art and devotion collections.
Designed to adorn a statue of the Virgin Mary in a church, this crown is typical of the sacred art of the French school: one imagines it surmounting a Madonna dressed in rich clothing, in the dim light of a chapel or an oratory. This crown has probably been diverted from its original use as a sacred decoration, to be used as a theater accessory, or during processions, by having real people wear it, personifying characters from biblical stories in the 19th century.
