19th Century Alabaster Bust
Artist: R.fontaine
A brief history: Alabaster is a white, natural material used in stonemasonry and sculpture. There are two distinct forms of alabaster, corresponding to two different mineral species: calcareous alabaster and gypsum alabaster, composed of calcite and gypsum respectively. Their ability to take a fine polish led to their inclusion among ancient marbles until the fall of the Roman Empire. Alabaster is used as an ornamental stone. Its softness allows it to be sculpted into elaborate forms.
