Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), whose full name was Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was a French novelist and playwright. He is one of the most widely read and translated French authors in the world, famous for his historical novels and plays. Pierre Petit (1831-1909) learned photographic techniques from Eugène Disdéri, the inventor of the carte de visite photograph. He was nicknamed "Collodion the Hairy." In 1859, he embarked on an ambitious project, a Gallery of Men of the Day, composed of portraits accompanied by biographical notes of prominent figures in entertainment, culture, and politics.
