"Jan Meijer (1927-1995) Abstract Composition"
Jan MEIJER (1927-1995) Abstract Composition Oil on canvas, signed lower left, circa 1973/1975 Dimensions: 100 x 81 cm In perfect condition. Jan Meyer, whose name is consistently spelled Jan Meijer, was a Dutch artist born in 1927 in Assen. Belonging to the lyrical abstraction movement, he lived in Dieudonné (Oise) where he died on March 21, 1995. After the war, Jan Meyer became friends with the poet Evert Rinsema, who was close to the De Stijl movement and a friend of Theo van Doesburg. Rinsema introduced him to passionate influences ranging from the minimalism of Piet Mondrian to the expressionism of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, as well as his introduction to the Dada movement. He briefly attended classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. The 1950s were marked by his first travels to France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and especially, from 1953 onward, Italy, where he associated with Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Antonio Saura, Karel Appel, and Corneille, and where he exhibited from 1959. Following the example of Raoul Ubac and Pierre Dmitrienko, who would become his friends, he settled in Dieudonné in 1960, where, "in his hillside studio, he unleashed the tubes of paint with broad strokes of his palette knife, crushing the homogeneous layers of paint onto the canvas."
