"Blackened Wood Pedestal Table, "portrait Of Louis XVI", Napoleon III Period – Mid-19th Century"
This magnificent Napoleon III period side table perfectly embodies the 19th-century taste for exquisite ornamentation and exceptional cabinetmaking. Raised on four turned legs, each topped with a finely crafted brass finial, it presents a slender and majestic silhouette. The decorative top features a central trinket tray adorned with a painted portrait of Louis XVI against a deep blue background, a delicate homage to the Ancien Régime. Surrounding this central tray, against a blackened wood background, are inlays of mother-of-pearl, brass, and thuya wood, forming graceful scrolls and stylized butterflies in a striking interplay of textures and light. A garland of pearls encircles the trinket tray, adding a touch of preciousness. The whole is surrounded by an openwork brass gallery following the curved lines of the tabletop. The classically elegant feet support two stretcher shelves, themselves framed by chiseled ingots which enhance the ornamental character of the piece while ensuring its stability. These shelves offer functional space while extending the decorative richness of the piece. This side table, both an occasional table and an object of art, testifies to the craftsmanship of Second Empire artisans. ********Period: Mid-19th century.
