Object description :

" Noh Mask Yase Otoko Meiji Japan "
Yase-Otoko type Noh mask, "the emaciated man," carved from wood, covered in beige patinated gofun and highlighted with black and red pigments, the reverse in natural wood, with the engraved signature "sukiyano,"  and written in white at the right side "thin man " early 20th century, Meiji period.
Wear and scratches on the forehead, sides, and chin; some gaps in the gofun around the eyes; small dents on the cheekbones; the sunken and protruding eyes covered with brass cupules;
  this mask represents a ghost suffering in hell ; it is the spirit of an hunter or fisherman who transgressed buddhist laws by killing animals ;the emaciated cheeks represent the torment and disconsolation  of a soul condemned to eternal damnation.
