"Animated Landscape Painting, View Of Parc Bourgogne, Château Charbonnel, Ys-sur-tille, 1860"
Walk in the Park of the Château Charbonnel at Is-sur-Tille (Côte-d'Or) — oil on canvas, monogrammed HA and dated 1860 — giltwood frame. A park scene with a peaceful atmosphere: a light-colored path crosses a deep lawn and leads the eye towards a distant, airy vista. Elegant strollers (couples and solitary figures) enliven the composition. The painting is monogrammed HA in the lower right and dated 1860. On the reverse, pencil markings on the stretcher identify figures, including “Charles de Saint Paul” (pencil inscriptions on the stretcher, visible on the back in your photos). A painting of sensation rather than narrative: the light, filtered and soft, stretches along the path like a veil, while the foliage shimmers in small, blended touches. The atmospheric perspective is particularly refined: the masses of trees diminish, lighten, and the horizon dissolves into a soft blue. The overall effect is one of calm, tranquility, and a sense of balance. It evokes the intimate landscapes of the mid-19th century, where the reduced human figure serves to emphasize the scale of the place and the poetry of time. Monogram HA (to be identified), dated 1860/ completed in 1863. Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Original stretcher. Dimensions: Canvas: 41 x 33 cm; Frame: 55 x 47 cm. Monogram lower right: HA. On the back (in pencil on the stretcher): identifying information about the figures, including “Charles de Saint Paul” 1863 (according to the inscriptions visible on the reverse in your photos). Park and remains of the Charbonnel castle in Is-sur-Tille: the rose garden, the bandstand, and the Lenoncourt tower are described as remains of the “Charbonnel castle” (17th century), and the park was embellished after 1846 by Countess Mélanie Charbonnel. General Joseph Claude Marie Charbonnel is documented as the owner of the castle in Is-sur-Tille and a major local figure; these elements fit well with a scene dated 1860, therefore during the time of the widow and the park's improvements.
