General Bréa, accompanied by Captain Mangin, was tasked in 1848 with taking action against the insurgents on the left bank of the Seine in Paris. He had succeeded in pushing them back outside the city walls. Hoping to bring them back by peaceful means, he advanced to parley outside the Fontainebleau Gate (present-day Place d'Italie), but he was seized and killed on June 25, 1848.
