Rare drawing by Jean-François Portaels (1818-1895) Allégorie de la Belgique, Etude pour le char de la Concorde,
Pen and brown ink, 16 x 11 cm. Framed size 29 x 21 cm. From a set of four drawings by Portaels, fiches on my Galerie Proantic
Allegory of Belgium, with open arms holding a flag, and wearing a Phrygian cap. The banner reads "Peoples form a holy alliance and join hands."
This allegory can also be seen on the Char de la Concorde in the procession of the Counts of Flanders in 1849. Jean-François Portaels designed the float.
