The painting is known in various versions, often traded on the antiques market, as belonging to the Roman school. However, the author is aware of an identical, shaped version in a contemporary Venetian frame in a private collection, which has allowed its pictorial influence to be diverted to the Veneto region, around Antonio Balestra (Verona, 1666-1740). The painter, in fact, was a pupil of Carlo Maratta in Rome and spread his classicist style to the mainland; this explains the attribution error that this composition has been subjected to. Among Balestra's numerous followers, it is believed that the work discussed here should be attributed to Bartolomeo Litterini, a tireless creator of devotional works, altarpieces, and large canvases for the churches of Venice, the Veneto region, and the Bergamo area.
