Oil on canvas in good condition on its original canvas and antique stretcher.
Dimensions: 65 x 81 cm.
A fine portrait of an elegant man, shown half-length, turned slightly to the left, his gaze directed at the viewer. He wears a brown coat lined with blue, revealing a rich waistcoat embroidered with orange and gold floral motifs, complemented by a finely crafted white lace cravat. The long, abundantly curled wig, characteristic of the years 1700–1720, frames the face softly and lends the whole a distinguished air. The dark, neutral background highlights the figure in a tradition inherited from the grand French portraiture of the late reign of Louis XIV and the early Regency. Particular attention is paid to materials, especially the lace and embroidery, which demonstrate a painter perfectly at ease with the representation of fabrics and textures.
The portrait is very likely that of a notable or gentleman from the wealthy bourgeoisie, the judiciary, or the administration.
The canvas is old, mounted on its original stretcher with wooden crossbars visible on the reverse, which confirms a dating to the early 18th century.
It is in very good condition, with no apparent restoration.
