Paolo Mei (June 18, 1831 – March 21, 1900) was an Italian painter active in Rome.

Biography

He was born in Rome to his father, Domenico, and mother, Matilde Farrajoni. In parish registers, the name Meo is sometimes mentioned, but Mei was used throughout his life.[1] His father died when Paolo was three years old, and his mother when he was 19; as a result, he inherited little financial means.[2]

He initially studied under Tommaso Minardi, then a professor at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome.[3] In 1856, he formed a close friendship with the painter Cesare Fracassini, who helped him secure numerous commissions.[4] He also frequently collaborated with Cesare Mariani. In 1859, he helped decorate the halls of Palazzo Raffaelli in Cingoli, in the province of Macerata. He also painted in Tivoli and Civitavecchia.

His works for churches include:

The Chapel of the Guardian Angel in the Church of Santa Maria in Aquiro;[5]

The Chapel of the Crucifix in the Church of Santa Lucia del Gonfalone; the ceiling and side walls; only the walls, depicting the Madonna Addolorata, survive.[6]

The altarpiece (1869) for the fourth chapel on the left in the Church of Santa Maria della Pace; the work of Cesare Fracassini.

The painting of St. Stephen and a fragment of the painting of St. Lawrence are donated to the Prefect of Rome for the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, both works by Fracassini, completed or partially completed before his death, based on his designs.[7][8]

In 1860, he provided several designs for the engraver Giuseppe Marcucci. He painted a number of small canvases depicting scenes of life in ancient Rome (also known as Neo-Pompeian motifs). In 1865, he traveled to Naples, where he contacted Domenico Morelli. After Minardi's death in 1871, he completed some frescoes (Art and Poetry) in the portico of the Verano cemetery (Campo Verano) in Rome. The remaining two were completed by Guglielmo De Sanctis.[9][10] He was buried in this cemetery. In 1893, he was admitted to the Congregazione Pontificia de’ Virtuosi of the Pantheon. Mei died in Rome on March 21, 1900. Sources
