Helmut Schaffenacker (1921-2010) - Large Vase With Two Spouts

A beautiful example of the explorations and research of ceramicist and sculptor Helmut Schaffenacker (1921-2010) is this large, two-necked vase decorated with a horse and rider.

Helmut Schäffenacker was born on July 5, 1921, in Ulm, Germany, into a family of artists: his father was the painter Otto Schäffenacker. He completed his initial training, then studied sculpture with Rudolf Pauschinger in Stuttgart, and opened his own studio, "Atelier Schäffenacker," in Ulm in 1948. He worked with various materials: ceramics (vases, wall reliefs), wood sculpture, stone, metal, and paint.

From the 1950s onward, he became known for his ceramic wall panels with reliefs, and his forms then moved away from the purely figurative to become more abstract. He set up his workshop around 1960 in Ulm-Böfingen, with several ceramic kilns, and employed up to ten people. He ended his ceramic production in 1993 (dismantling the kilns) but continued to exhibit in other media. He died on August 19, 2010, in Ulm.
