Quilted Skirt In Striped Red And Lapis Blue Indian Fabric - Provence, Circa 1870
Circa 1870, Provence. Provençal quilted skirt or Marseilles petticoat, in striped Indian cotton dyed in Adrianople red and lapis blue, dating from the Second Empire. It is interesting to observe a quilted skirt laid flat, fresh off the loom, before the seams were attached. Copper roller printing on cotton with a picot background and very rich polychromy. Unidentified manufacturer, but typical of an Alsatian manufactory, of the Steiner or Dollfuss & Miegg type (?) for the Provençal market in the 19th century. Flat skirt, the stitching entirely done by hand with a running stitch in the shape of "Ravioli" or small diamonds, 1.5 cm on each side. Ten pleats at the hem and a lining of ecru cotton printed with chamois flowers (a few small holes and stains in the lining). Soft skirt with fine wadding. No defects. Very good condition of colour and preservation. Dimensions: Height 83 cm, length of skirt laid flat 283 cm.
