The painter:
José Lupiáñez Carrasco (1864–1938).
A Spanish landscape painted, José Lupiáñez Carrasco occupies a significant place in the tradition of Spanish naturalist landscape painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Málaga, he trained at the School of Fine Arts in Seville and the San Telmo School before joining the San Fernando School in Madrid, where he studied under Carlos de Haes, a major figure in the renewal of landscape painting in Spain. His work is distinguished by a direct and sincere approach to nature, often painted en plein air. Faithful to the principles of naturalism, Lupiáñez favored stark landscapes—mountains, countryside, forests, or roads—generally devoid of human presence, paying particular attention to light, atmosphere, and chromatic variations. The area surrounding Madrid, notably the Sierra de Guadarrama, Aranjuez, and El Escorial, were among his favorite subjects. This pair of paintings in Toledo is a rarity in his oeuvre. Appreciated during his lifetime by collectors and institutions, he regularly participated in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions and spent most of his career in Madrid. Today, his works are held in several Spanish public collections, including the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the Museum of History of Madrid, and the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Santander, as well as in numerous private collections.
