Antique Cup, Majolica From Deruta With Cupid Decoration, 17th Century
Artist: Majolique De Deruta
A 17th-century majolica platter from Deruta, formerly a presentation dish on a pedestal.
It features a decoration of fantastical animals arranged in semicircles, themselves separated by an imaginary floral motif.
In the center, within a medallion, appears a cherub: Eros or Cupid in a landscape.
Each of the registers is separated by hatched yellow borders, which are also found on the rim of the platter.
On the reverse, circular marks can be seen in the glaze, as well as the clay itself in the center.
It can be assumed that this large platter was intended to become a tazza (a serving dish) or to be placed on a pedestal. In fact, it is probably an old tazza, lacking its pedestal.
The overall condition is good despite some minor chips.
A very beautiful and highly decorative platter.
Dimensions:
25.5 cm.
