Empire Period
A small Directoire-style tilting-top pedestal table, Parisian work. This elegant Directoire-style table, reminiscent of late 18th-century Parisian pieces, is similar in style to the works of Bernard Molitor. The octagonal top is edged with a thin brass molding, a characteristic detail of quality furniture from this period. It rests on a turned central column, terminating in a tripod base with clean, balanced lines. The entire piece is veneered in oak, using solid mahogany and mahogany veneer, revealing meticulous and harmonious craftsmanship typical of Parisian workshops. The tilting mechanism of the top is functional, allowing for both practical and decorative use. The piece has undergone some restoration consistent with age and use. There are a few visible marks on the top, likely due to water damage, but these are minor and do not detract from the structure or the overall elegance. The table can be used as is; a simple polish will restore its shine. A visit to a cabinetmaker would, however, restore it to its original splendor. This pedestal table is equally suited to use as a side table or to showcasing a fine work of art, particularly from the Empire period. It integrates perfectly into a classic interior, paired with two Louis XVI or Directoire chairs, but will also find its place in a country house where its understated elegance will make all the difference. Dimensions: – Diameter: 56.5 cm – Height: 69.8 cm About Bernard Molitor Bernard Molitor (1755–1833) was one of the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Having become a master in 1787, he worked for a prestigious clientele, successfully navigating the Louis XVI, Directoire, and Empire periods. His work is distinguished by the purity of lines, the quality of the veneers and a very sure sense of proportions, qualities which can be found in the spirit of this pedestal table.
