Born in Les Sables d'Olonne in 1898, Jean Launois studied in Paris and won the Villa Abd El Tif Prize in Algiers in 1920.
Drawn to the exotic, he also traveled to the Far East and led a bohemian life between Paris, where he exhibited regularly, and Algeria, where he reunited with his friends Marquet, Brouty, Bouchaud ...
His highly original work is that of a sensitive artist with a confident hand, who also excelled in book illustrations, for artists such as Carco and Dorgelès ...
He was admired by his circle of art lovers and artists, both for the singular quality of his work and for his engaging personality. Several posthumous exhibitions have been dedicated to him : Museum From Algiers in 1947, Narbonne in 1971, Nice, the Musée des Arts Modernes de la Ville de Paris in 1977, and the Musée des Sables d'Olonne dedicated a permanent room to him, following several exhibitions in 1976 and 1983.
The watercolor "Bou Saada" is entirely characteristic of his work, centered on the human figure, depicted with sensitivity and acuity.
