Alpine Landscape Of The 19th Century, Traveller On A Mountain Path – Ink Drawing, Ca. 1840
Alpine Landscape of the 19th Century, Traveller on a Mountain Path – ink drawing, ca. 1840
Brown ink and India ink on brown paper, with white heightening.
Dimensions with frame: 58 × 71 cm
Mountain landscape depicting a steep path running alongside a torrent, animated by the discreet figure of a traveller riding a mule. The composition unfolds in depth through rocky masses, trees and alpine reliefs, with a distant chain of snow-capped mountains, broad and monumental in scale, articulated through white heightening.
Executed on brown paper in brown ink and India ink with white highlights, the work belongs to the tradition of Romantic landscape painting of the mid-19th century, in which the human figure, deliberately reduced in scale, is absorbed into the vastness of nature. The contrast between the traveller and the monumental presence of the mountains conveys a contemplative vision of the landscape, where man appears as a transient element confronted with the permanence and grandeur of the natural world.
The rigorous spatial construction, the almost monochrome treatment and the controlled use of tonal values attest to a fine quality of execution and a mature approach to landscape drawing.
Unsigned, presented without glass.
