Pair Of Silver-gilt Cruets And Their Tray, France, 19th Century
A liturgical set comprising a pair of cruets and their gilt silver trays. The cruets, mounted on pedestals, have an ovoid body adorned with a distinct chased decoration for each: – Wine cruet: bunches of grapes on the lower part of the body; – Water cruet: bouquets of rushes. Both vessels also feature friezes of water leaves, rope motifs, and rings tightening the stems and necks. The spout is flared with high, curved rims. The cruets have hinged lids with applied knobs matching the decoration, making them easy to distinguish. The applied handle is crook-shaped. The oval tray has a fairly pronounced central depression. It is decorated with a frieze of water leaves and has two supports for holding the cruets. French work from the early 19th century. 950/1000 silver. Hallmarks: – Tray: Rooster (1809–1819) – Cruets: Old Man (1819–1838) Parisian work. Master silversmith: Alexis Renaud, active from 1831 to 1847, specialist in religious silverware. His hallmark appears on the cruets.
