It is decorated with an intricate Borre-style knot motif surrounding a central cross. The iron pin is missing (as is often the case). The artistic style known as Borre is an intricate knot motif, often composed of stylized animals or symmetrical designs, here surrounding a central cross. This knot motif dates from the period when the Danish kings ruled England, around 952-1050 AD, a time when English art was under Viking influence. The central cross motif appears on several late Anglo-Saxon metal pieces, although it appeared much earlier in Anglo-Saxon art. Circa 950-1050 AD. Fine condition.
Diameter: 28.6 mm. For a very similar example, see page 319, fig. 1313: Volume 3: Brooches of Antiquity.
