Ancient Amazonian Ritual Mask, Late 19th – Early 20th Century, Brazil
Antique Amazonian ritual mask, carved and polychromed wood
Ritual mask carved and hollowed by hand from light wood, originating from the western Amazon basin, most likely Brazil (Brazil–Peru border region). The elongated face features deliberately exaggerated elements: a prominent nose, strongly projecting chin, and an open mouth with carved wooden teeth, indicating a spiritual being or forest spirit rather than a human figure.
The surface is decorated with traditional red, black and white pigments, showing an old, coherent patina consistent with ritual use. Side and lower perforations suggest it was worn during ceremonial dances. The interior shows clear hand-tool marks and age-related wear.
Estimated date: late 19th – early 20th century.
Condition: surface wear and patina from use; old, inactive woodworm damage to the left ear, stable.
Dimensions: approx. 26 cm high; 16.5 cm wide.
