Oil On Canvas "banks Of The Seine" Signed A. Karbowsky, Late 19th Century
Artist: Adrien Karbowsky 1855-1945
Oil on canvas depicting a landscape along the banks of the Seine, probably the Chatou bridge, signed lower right A. Karbowsky and dated 1890. Adrien Karbowsky was a French artist who distinguished himself in both painting and decoration. He was a student of Puvis de Chavannes and frequented the studios of Lavastre and Lequien. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, and the Salon des Tuileries. He worked on numerous public and private decorations, notably contributing to the decoration of pavilions for the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, the decoration of the famous Villa Kerylos in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, the Hôtel Lutetia in Paris, the Prague Opera House, and the private residence of the couturier Jacques Doucet. His paintings often depict landscapes in very soft and delicate tones with a gentle light. Many of his works are held in museums, notably the Musée d'Orsay and the Petit Palais in Paris. Our painting, depicting the Seine spanned by a bridge, likely the one at Chatou, also presents its banks in delicate, ethereal pastel tones. It is housed in a later gilt and painted wood and stucco frame.
