Pair Of Silver-plated Table Nutmeg Graters, Circa 1900
Pair of pretty silver-plated metal drums decorated on top and bottom with a frieze of water leaves. They open halfway, via a screw thread, allowing you to place the precious nutmeg inside.
One side is a very fine, concave iron grater, the other open.
This curious model, which I was unfamiliar with, is used with a drum in each hand, nutmeg held between the two concave graters. Each hand rotates in opposite directions over the dish being served, creating a deluge of aroma for entire table.
Good condition, no visible maker's mark, probably French work, late 19th century or 1900.
3.5cm x 3.3cm each, weight: 130g for the pair.
