A large, exceptional, and rare pastel portrait of Queen Marie Leczinska, wife of King Louis XV; a portrait based on a work by Jean-Marc Nattier, one of her favorite portraitists, perhaps even her principal one, as the Queen entrusted her likeness to no one else. This pastel demonstrates the quality of JM Nattier ** (or that of his workshop, see Artnet), as seen in the Queen's beautiful pose, the execution against a blue-green background, the fullness of the garments, the jewelry, the lace, the fabrics, and the fur. This magnificent pastel was undoubtedly executed by a great pastel artist of the late 18th or early 19th century, particularly during the period of the Bourbon Restoration to the French throne: Louis XVIII in 1815 and Charles X in 1825, both grandsons of the Queen and King Louis XV, as was Louis XVI, frequently depicted their two ancestors, whom they venerated daily, as their parents had died young. Pastel in its original oval giltwood frame from the early 19th century, under a small-bubble glass pane from the 18th century. The back of the pastel was reattached and protected during the 19th century.
