Paul André Jean Eschbach (1881-1961) Sunny Alley
Artist: Paul André Jean Eschbach (1881-1961)
A beautiful perspective of a peaceful alleyway with bucolic charm. Excellent mastery of color, a luminous painting. Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Good overall condition. Paul Eschbach (1881-1961), French School. A student of Jean-Paul Laurens and Pharaon de Winter, he painted portraits until 1920, then devoted himself to seascapes and landscapes. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1903, the year he presented a portrait of a man and won a silver medal there in 1907. He also participated in numerous art galleries, including one in Lille, and exhibited in Roubaix, Douai, Mulhouse, and Nantes. Out of competition at the 1926 Salon des Artistes Français, he specialized in landscapes. In the first twenty years of his career, he made a name for himself with portraits and genre scenes, but during a trip to Italy, drawn to plein air painting, he began to compose seascapes in 1920. Shortly after, he discovered Brittany and the port life of Concarneau. He enjoyed it so much that he became President of the Concarneau Artistic Union, along with Henri Barnoin and Eugène Labitte, among others. An excellent colorist, he painted Brittany with the rigorous style of a marine painter. He taught at the Julian Academy from 1912 to 1938. Awarded a gold medal in 1920, his works are featured in numerous museums. Frame dimensions: 60.5 x 52.5 cm. Oil painting dimensions: 46 x 38 cm.
