François Cormont is an artist whose work is highly regarded for its ability to capture the charm of the French countryside in the 20th century. A Post-Impressionist, he specialized in village landscapes and rural French scenes. He loved to paint the "heart" of villages: a market square, a church surrounded by houses, or a quiet alleyway. His compositions are often balanced. Unlike the darker academic painters, François Cormont frequently used soft, natural light, typical of a late afternoon or a sunny morning. His technique is direct. The impasto is often visible, giving life and texture to the old stone walls and rooftops.
