Édouard Edmond Doigneau, born September 27, 1865, in Nemours, died April 20, 1954, at his home in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, was a French painter. Biography: "Ronde des petites bigoudènes" (Round of the Little Bigoudènes), 1905. Gold Medal at the 1906 Salon des Artistes Français. Collection of the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris. "Le Relais au bord de la vallée" (The Inn by the Valley), "Le Rendez-vous de chasse" (The Hunting Rendezvous), 1913, oil on canvas, 162 x 130 cm. Nemours, Château-Musée, 2015. Initially destined for a military career, he entered the École Polytechnique in 1885. He left in 1900 to devote himself to painting. He studied under Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian in Paris, then traveled to Fontainebleau, Brittany, the Camargue, the banks of the Loire, and later to Spain and Africa. He frequently returned to Paris, however, where he had a studio at 67 Boulevard Berthier and frequented the Salons. He exhibited from 1908 to 1911 at the Galerie Georges Petit.[4] Édouard Doigneau was a member of the Société des Artistes Français (outside the competition), the Société des Aquallistes (watercolorists), the Société Orientalistes (Orientalists), and the Société des Peintres de Cheval (horse painters). Édouard Doigneau was mobilized in 1914. A squadron leader in the 29th Artillery Regiment, he was seriously wounded, for which he received the Legion of Honor and several citations. A draftsman, he sketched in his notebooks and painted in watercolors picturesque scenes of Brittany, particularly the Pays Bigouden, as well as animal scenes. A classically trained regionalist painter, he refused to belong to any school or adhere to any particular style. However, his works created in Africa link him to the genre of Orientalist painting.
