"Apocalyptic Virgin In Carved And Polychrome Wood (tile), Southern Germany, Early 17th Century"
Apocalyptic Virgin and Child, probably Southern Germany/Austria/Bohemia, circa 1580–1650. Polychrome wood (linden) sculpture, entirely carved in the round, hollowed out on the reverse and closed with a lid. Depicts the Immaculate Virgin on a crescent moon, walking in flowing drapery, holding the Infant Jesus on her left arm. Both wear a crown of rays (some elements restored or replaced). The Virgin holds a scepter in her right hand. Traces of the original polychromy with gilding, later repainting and retouching, wear consistent with age, minor damage, and losses.
