"The Haymaker" is a bronze sculpture with a brown patina created by the French sculptor Désiré Grisard, active during the first half of the 20th century. The work depicts a peasant woman in the act of haymaking, captured in a dynamic and powerful movement, firmly holding a rake in her hands. The figure is dressed in a long dress, an apron, and a headscarf, typical of rural attire from the beginning of the century. Her slightly bent body and outstretched arms convey the physical exertion of fieldwork, while the folds of her clothing and the muscular tension are rendered with great finesse, demonstrating the sculptor's technical mastery. The textured base, reminiscent of earth and hay, anchors the scene in an authentic agricultural setting, emphasizing the dignity of women's labor. Grisard, whose signature is present on this same base, is usually known for his decorative Art Deco bronzes, but here he presents a more realistic and socially conscious work, celebrating the strength and nobility of the rural world. Désiré Grisard (born in 1872) was a French sculptor active primarily between 1925 and 1940, renowned for his Art Deco bronze works. His sculptures, often figurative, depict women, dancers, or allegorical scenes. *********Period: 1930 Excellent condition. Shipping available upon request in France and internationally.
