Meissen Sugar Bowl With Cover, Early Marcolini Period, C.1774
This Meissen porcelain sugar bowl with cover was produced in 1774, at the very beginning of the Marcolini period. The form and decoration belong firmly to the late Rococo tradition that continued at Meissen during this decade.
Painted with Watteau-style fêtes galantes scenes, the bowl shows elegant figures set within a garden landscape, interpreted with the lightness typical of Meissen painting. The cover, finished with a rosebud finial, carries a matching painted scene. The base bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark.
