Late 19th Century Wedding Handkerchief - Needle Lace - Brussels Gauze Stitch - Antique Linen
Unmarked wedding handkerchief (circa 1870-1880). The center piece is made of fine lawn with a border of Brussels lace worked in the Point de Gaze technique. The network consists of two extremely fine, simply crossed threads of light cotton. Its gauze ground gives it a delicate, transparent, and extremely fine and light appearance. Its often complex and particularly elaborate decoration is its defining characteristic. It abounds with a wide variety of decorative elements, both figurative and purely ornamental. The handkerchief is decorated with daisies, foliage, five-petaled flowers reminiscent of forget-me-nots, roses with overlapping petals (here at the corners), and a great diversity of motifs such as wheels, stars, polka dots, and polka dots, all executed with precision. The handkerchief has undergone a suitable treatment to remove dirt and dust without altering the material or its structure.
Condition: Note a few tiny snags scattered throughout the weave. Solid material, no fragility under tension, no weakness.
