Large Walnut Armchair, Italian Renaissance Tuscany, Late 16th - Early 17th Century, Armchair.
A very fine armchair, or chaise longue, in carved and molded walnut from the late 16th or early 17th century, originating from the Tuscany region of Italy. It rests on four square legs connected by two shaped stretchers. The two front legs are joined by a wide, openwork, carved central stretcher. The two rear legs are also connected by a nearly identical stretcher, but without carving. The two side rails, as well as the front rail beneath the seat, are shaped. The wooden seat has been upholstered in red fabric and is finished with gilt nails. The armrests are wide, flat, slightly curved, and terminate in a very slight scroll. The rear uprights of the back are straight with a slight slope and terminate at their tops in a palmette and a scroll. They are connected by two carved and sculpted wooden rails. Please note, there are some minor repairs, particularly at the two ends of the backrest supports, as well as four wooden brackets for reinforcement under the seat (see photos).
