Large Ceramic Bas-relief By Odile Devauchelle
Artist: Odile Devauchelle
Important stoneware bas-relief by artist Odile Devauchelle, a French artist born in 1943 who worked in her pottery studio in Saint Savin sur Gartempe for many years. Her pottery was fired in a traditional wood-fired kiln. Her creations generally focused on shaped pieces such as vases and lamp bases. Very few bas-reliefs of this type exist, and this is a rare, large-format work by the artist, making it a major piece in her oeuvre. Works by the artist are regularly presented by a major Parisian French gallery at Design Miami/Basel, where they are very successful alongside pieces by Ramié, Picault, Pouchain, Madoura, and others. This bas-relief is composed of 22 pottery elements sculpted before firing and assembled on a wooden panel. Note the richness of the decoration, which at its center depicts a couple beneath an architectural arch supported by columns and capitals. Adorned with doves and surmounted by a basket of plenty; wedding theme. A Provençal village in the background and two farm animal scenes in the lower part. The whole is in perfect original condition and without the slightest chip or restoration! Signed on the edge: O Devauchelle 1983. Large dimensions: 116.5 cm x 58.5 cm.
