Jacob Frères, Pair Of Stamped Armchairs From The Empire-consulate Period.
A rare pair of Empire-Consulate period mahogany and mahogany veneer armchairs, stamped Jacob Frères rue Meslée.
The inverted, scrolled backs are known as "Etruscan-style," with offset armrest supports featuring double balusters topped with balls. The backs are joined by double cyma moldings with scrolls and volutes simulating a lotus flower (a characteristic of Jacob Frères' and later Jacob Desmalter's production).
The four saber legs recall the Klismos form of the Roman Empire. The magnificent red velvet upholstery is embossed with an Empire motif of laurel wreaths and palmettes, in the style of the great Lyon manufacturers such as Prelle or Tassinari et Chatel.
In used condition.
Each armchair is stamped JACOB FRÈRES RUE MESLÉE, a stamp used by the two sons of Georges Jacob (Jacob Desmalter and Georges II Jacob) between 1797 and 1803. A similar pair of armchairs was delivered in 1806 to the Élysée Palace, residence of Joachim Murat (1767-1815) and his wife Caroline Bonaparte (1782-1839), who had it refurnished and occupied it until their departure for Naples in 1808. These armchairs were placed in a drawing room of the grand state apartment on the ground floor.
In very good condition.
Directoire-Consulate period, between 1797 and 1803.
