The Battle of the Cards
Circa 1930
Gouache over pencil, signed lower right
51 x 45 cm

Bruno Seuchter was a painter, illustrator, and poster artist who worked primarily in France. The subject of this large gouache is extremely original: the king of diamonds in the foreground is flanked on the right by his jacks and is battling the king of clubs, who is aided by five knights. The diagonal composition is stylized in a typically Art Deco style, characteristic of Seuchter's illustrations from the 1930s.
