Biography:
Rachel Favet-Scheurer 1919/2009.
Figurative painter whose career spanned from 1946 to 2009. She participated in several international salons and exhibitions in various countries (Switzerland, France, Italy, United States, see list below).
She primarily worked in oil painting and pastels, but she also used acrylics, gouache, and painting on silk and burlap. Her work consists mainly of landscapes painted in oils, as well as animals rendered in charcoal, pastels, or oil.
It also includes numerous compositions, still lifes, flowers, and more.
Rachel Favet-Scheurer was born on March 14, 1919, in Geneva, to a Swiss-German father, Ernest Scheurer, and a French mother, Eugénie Bornat. She was the eldest of four children. Her father was a draftsman, engraver, and sculptor, and he painted occasionally. From childhood, Rachel showed a strong affinity for colors, flowers, and animals. She was gifted at drawing, so much so that a schoolteacher offered to give her parents lessons.
But her father refused; he did not want his daughter to pursue such an unprofitable profession. This didn't stop the young girl from continuing to draw!
She was 19 when her father committed suicide, leaving behind a wife and four children, three of whom were very young. Rachel became the head of the family and found a job as a decorator in the advertising department of a company. There, she learned various techniques that she would later use.
In 1943, she married and gave birth to a daughter in 1944. The earliest recorded paintings date from 1946 and already bear her signature, including her two surnames (Favet and Scheurer). Around this time, she met Georges Migot, a Parisian musician and art critic, at a music academy in Geneva where she was taking classes.
He showed great interest in her work and offered to mentor her, helping her channel her passion and curiosity. This mentor-student relationship lasted several years.
She never forgot what she owed him and always mentioned him in interviews. During this period, she learned a great deal from the masters by reading numerous books devoted to their methods. These readings led her to use virgin wax and to experiment with different mixtures of oil and essence.
She enjoyed experimenting with traditional techniques while also trying new materials like acrylics. In the 1950s, she began participating in international exhibitions such as the Salon des Indépendants in Paris. She also exhibited frequently in Geneva and France in both group and solo shows.
In the 1970s, she received numerous diplomas and medals at exhibitions abroad. For health reasons, she reduced her activities in the late 1990s, without, however, stopping completely. In fact, she painted and drew practically until her death (her last drawing dates from late 2008).
She lived for her painting and always had a wealth of ideas in her head.
She said it would have taken her several lifetimes to accomplish everything. She passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a series of projects, sketches, and unfinished works.
The exact number of signed works she produced is unknown, but certainly more than 500. Source: Rachel Favet-Scheurer's website.
