Porcelain Plate Illustrated After Ivan Bilibin, Russia, Late 19th Century

A superb porcelain plate from the Kornilov Brothers factory. It is decorated with a scene painted after Ivan Bilibin and taken from the Russian fairy tale "The Feather of Finist the White Falcon." It depicts the moment when a young girl asks her father, as he is about to leave for the city, to bring her back a feather from Finist the White Falcon, who turns out to be a prince of great beauty. The rim is decorated with a frieze of various animals and trees in shades of green and gold.

It bears the mark "Made in Russia by Kornilow Bros." and Bilibin's signature, along with a number ("Bil 7/141"), on the back.

The Kornilov Brothers porcelain factory was active in Saint Petersburg from 1835 to 1917.

Ivan Bilibin (1876-1942) was a Russian painter, illustrator, and theatrical designer. Trained by Anton Aschbe in Munich and later at Princess Tenicheff's studio-school under Ilya Repin, he quickly joined the artists' association "The World of Art." He is primarily known for his illustrations inspired by Russian folk culture, nature, and the epic tales of oral tradition known as byliny. His works are characterized by a graphic style reminiscent of stained glass, with black lines outlining the figures. He also designed costumes and sets for operas and ballets by Rimsky-Korsakov and Stravinsky, among others.
