Signed “Jean Besnard” on the reverse.
Son of the painter Albert Besnard and the sculptor Charlotte Dubray, Jean Besnard (1889-1958) naturally gravitated towards an artistic career. After training as a painter, he turned to ceramics, which he appreciated for its raw and rustic appearance. From the 1920s onward, he exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Tuileries, and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. He also participated in the 1925 Exposition of Decorative and Industrial Arts, where he was awarded a silver medal. Two years later, he developed a new "crispé" glaze technique that imitates the appearance of shagreen. His style is characterized by simple forms and a palette of gray, ochre, pink, green, and blue. Today, his works are exhibited at the Musée du Luxembourg and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, among other places.
