Orbiter Pendant Lamp By Raak Amsterdam
Maximum height 110 cm x Diameter 50 cm. Normal wear and tear on the plexiglass section (light scratches) (see photos). The Orbiter pendant lamp, created by Raak Amsterdam in the late 1950s, is one of the iconic pieces from the Dutch company. Its acrylic globe—originally available in clear, amber yellow, azure blue, or smoky brown—consists of two half-shells held together by a metal ring, around a central core that diffuses the light softly. This simple and precise construction perfectly illustrates Raak's philosophy: an architecture of light based on the clarity of materials and the precision of proportions. The history of this model reflects the evolution of the brand's design. Presented as the Orbiter pendant lamp in Raak catalog no. 4 (1958), the lamp became Sphere in 1962, then Roger in 1968, likely reflecting the enthusiasm generated by the lunar missions. In 1978, it adopted the name Lunar in catalog no. 11. Its technical references followed the same evolution, changing from number B-1171 to B-1151, before alternating between these two codes in subsequent reissues. Founded in 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn, a former Philips employee, Raak quickly established itself as a major player in modernist lighting. The brand explored an organic and futuristic aesthetic, combining glass, metal, and molded plastics to create luminous objects with simple yet instantly recognizable silhouettes. The Orbiter pendant light by Raak Amsterdam is a perfect example: an essential form, an enveloping light diffusion, and a sculptural presence that integrates naturally into contemporary interiors.
