Bronze Egyptian-style Vulture, Late 19th Century
Perhaps a Grand Tour piece, this stylized vulture perched on a base of unidentified material (marble or granite) clearly references the pantheon of ancient Egypt.
A symbol of the goddess Nekhbet, a deity representing pharaonic protection on par with the cobra, the vulture was considered a beneficial and positive bird of prey, as it spreads its wings to protect its young from the heat and sun. In fact, the word for protection in Egyptian hieroglyphs is represented by the image of a vulture.
