"The Alpilles from the Château des Baux-de-Provence"
Watercolor,
Signed lower right.
This previously unpublished work has been acquired by the Yves Brayer archives and will be included in the artist's forthcoming catalogue raisonné.
This beautiful and finely executed work by Yves Brayer depicts a view of the Alpilles from the Château des Baux-de-Provence. The artist has enlivened his watercolor with several figures strolling on the château's esplanade and has played with contrasts to give depth to his work.
Impressed by his talent, his mother enrolled him at the Bourges School of Art. Arriving in Paris in 1924, he attended the Montparnasse and Grande Chaumière academies, then the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he earned his diploma. He was encouraged and mentored by renowned artists such as Jean-Louis Forain and the sculptor Robert Wlérick. He began exhibiting his work very early, while still a student, at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. In 1927, he traveled to Spain on a state travel grant, which allowed him to meet museum masters in Madrid who would influence his future work. His travels didn't end there; he continued to other countries such as Morocco, Mexico, and Italy, eventually returning to France to continue his journey and share his work with the public.
A devotee of watercolor and painting, he produced landscapes inspired by his many travels and his native Provence.
Works by the artist can be admired at the Musée Yves Brayer in Les Baux-de-Provence.
Dimensions: 49 x 65 cm unframed and 77 x 92 cm with its original giltwood frame.
