"Bronze Medallion Of William Stephen By Rogat, 1835"
A bronze medallion depicting the portrait of Charles-Guillaume Étienne (1777–1845), French writer, playwright, academician, and politician of the July Monarchy. The bust is shown in left profile, rendered in a realistic and expressive style characteristic of 19th-century French portrait medals. An original suspension ring is preserved at the top of the medallion. Dated 1835, this medallion belongs to the tradition of commemorative portraits of public figures during the July Monarchy. Charles-Guillaume Étienne, a member of parliament and the French Academy, was regularly depicted during this period, notably in the form of medals, busts, and caricatures. This medallion testifies to the quality of the work of Étienne Rogat, a medalist active in the first half of the 19th century. This is a fine example of an official bronze portrait, at the crossroads of numismatic art and sculpture, intended for the commemoration and dissemination of the image of the intellectual and political elites of its time.
