René Lalique - “bacchantes” Vase In Opalescent Glass

Artist: René Lalique
Pressed opalescent molded glass vase.

The Bacchantes vase is one of Lalique's iconic creations. It is one of the few pieces that has been continuously featured in the catalog since its creation in 1927. Initially made of glass, it has been produced in crystal since 1947.

René Lalique was inspired by the representation of the female body throughout his career. The Bacchantes correspond to the Maenads of Greek mythology. Here, the young priestesses of Bacchus form a circle of sculptural nudes in bas-relief with a disturbing sensuality, dancing to celebrate the god of wine, vines, and excess.
